BMTC Inaugurates 300 Metro Feeder Buses
A country’s growth is significantly attributed to the development of its metropolitan cities. It is the summation of the economic indicators of these densely packed areas that are considered to estimate the nation’s ranking globally. Bangalore is also referred to as the Silicon Valley of India due to its position as the country’s top software and semiconductor hub. A major destination for several Indians looking for prospective job opportunities, the city boasts a wide variety of residents.
According to the UN World Urbanization Prospects 2023 update, with over 13,600,000 people distributed in a 709 km square area, Bangalore has an average population density of roughly 17,000 individuals per kilometer square. Catering to the daily transportation needs of this population has been a significant concern for the state government. In addition to public bus services, cabs, and autos used all over the country, the metro facility has been a lifeline to the city dwellers, especially the working class. Recent reports of added auxiliary services to the metro have been a source of contentment for the city.
The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation, abbreviated as (BMTC) is the regulatory authority of all public transit facilities in Bangalore. It currently operates around 5,600 schedules, encompassing 57,463 trips that span over an area of 11.37 lakh km. On average, the BMTC facilitates the domestic travel of 43 lakh passengers daily within the city boundary. It also operates within a margin of 25 km beyond the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike jurisdiction regions. Despite the abundant public transportation, city officials have expressed their concerns regarding the system’s inadequacies.

The public finds the transit to and from the metro station expensive; this defeats the cause of budget-friendly and fast transport. To combat this issue, the BMTC decided to build up the feeder bus services. “With an increasing demand for Metro train services, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has unveiled plans to expand Metro feeder services to 300. In response to the growing need for improved last-mile connectivity, BMTC intends to introduce 9-meter-long buses for use as feeder services. We intend to brand the nine-meter metro feeder buses uniquely.
Currently, we provide 9-meter non-AC 120 electric buses for use on metro feeder lines as part of the national clean air initiative. In addition to the 121 metro transports currently in operation, we will introduce 179 extra buses by the end of April 2024, 024, thereby taking the total number of feeder services to 300.” said a BMTC official.
