Mahle Establishes Bio-Mobility Center in Brazil

As one of the pillars of a nation’s economy, the automotive industry is fundamentally linked to its development and prosperity. Nevertheless, heavy reliance on fossil fuels has led to significant environmental concerns. The transportation industry has been a major contributor to the global carbon footprint and overall deterioration of air quality due to the release of particulate matter and harmful gases. However, the world has been moving forward from its dependence on non-renewables.

Achievements in technology and greener alternatives dotting the World Wide Web are a testament to the international spirit of sustainable development. With rampant eco-friendly initiatives being adopted in every industrial sector, the world is steadfastly marching into the net zero-emission future. Hydrogen-based modes of transit have evolved as an exciting new approach to the 2030 goals. Depending on the region of the globe and the scale of the market, the developments of hydrogen combustion technology will greatly vary. Mahle’s global bio-mobility center in Brazil is an effort to accommodate this differential development.

The path to zero emission in the automotive sector is battery-electric or hybrid transportation models. As widely observed in countries like Europe, North America, and China, hydrogen-driven clean and efficient combustion engines are a significant part of the future of the transportation landscape. This sustainable fuel alternative is capable of supporting a large selection of vehicles ranging from small-scale passenger cars to massive transportation trucks. Experts worldwide are enthusiastic about the potential of the internal combustion engine market in countries like India and South America.

Here, sustainable options, like e-fuels or biofuels, have been observed to contribute to the recent decarbonization of domestic transit. Experts from Mahle’s Global Bio-Mobility have been closely collaborating with Tech Centers, Farmington Hills in USA, and Pune, India, for the last two decades. The Jundiaí-based bio-mobility has been using its expertise and engineering know-how to develop ethanol and biodiesel engines. Explaining the company’s goals, Arnd Franz, CEO of Mahle, stated, “If we want to stop the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration, we need solutions for all markets and applications. Biofuels like ethanol have a track record of successful market introduction. For a climate-neutral mobility, we need drastically bigger contributions from biofuels.”

The Mahle Tech Center established in Jundiaí is one of the biggest engine development centers in South American. It has dedicated several resources for the development of internal combustion engines over the years. Specialized testing equipment installed at these sites for the analysis for sustainable fuels further solidifies their sustainable and eco-friendly image. It strives to promote biofuels along with the decarbonization movement using electric vehicles and hydrogen fuels. Ethanol and other substituents-based fuels have proven their practicability, efficiency, and competitiveness time and time again.

“Ethanol and other biofuels have proven their efficiency, practicability and competitiveness. With more biofuels, we can move faster towards an emission free society, especially in markets with a strong agricultural sector.” explained a key members of the program. Targeting stronger biofuels alternative as well as heterogenous mixtures of regular fuels and variety of biofuels like ethanol or biodiesel, this initiative catapulted the transformation of the automotive industry.
