Assam Government to Collaborate with Tata Power Develop Regional EV Charging Stations

Despite occupying only 2% of the world’s landmass, cities hold significant impact control over the global climate and economy. The heart of a nation’s development in terms of economy, growth, and population lies in the development of its cities. At the same time, cities are the hub for climate deterioration, contributing an estimated 70% of the CO2 emissions worldwide while consuming over 67% of the world’s energy generated annually. Mobility is essential given India’s large size, expansive landscape, and varying population density.

The country largely relies on its automotive industry regarding economic growth and migration. A shift in India’s automobile sector from its dependence on fossil fuels to sustainable electric vehicles has significantly impacted the country’s energy security, environment, and global standing. With battery-powered vehicles and hybrid plug-in electric alternatives rapidly overtaking the transportation landscape, cities are now working towards normalizing the green movement. Another step towards this goal is signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TATA power and the Assam government to establish an EV charging network in the northeastern state.

As the electrification of the automotive sector gained momentum in India, several giants and newer startups joined their efforts to add to the ever-growing electric fleet. With increasing traction due to a dip in battery prices and growing awareness about EVs, cities capitalized on the opportunity. After the successful integration of EVs into their automotive skeleton, the nation faced concerns concerning specialized daily maintenance and servicing requirements. A lack of public charging options and increasing domestic electricity costs per unit used inhibited the growth of the country’s EV sector. Several private and governmental agencies combed this problem by combining their resources to lay the groundwork for an ‘EV ready’ country.

Tata Power EV Charging Solutions Limited (TPEVCSL)– a leading provider of EV charging-related solutions, formally declared its affiliation with the Government of Assam to augment the electric vehicle ecosystem. This partnership will help the state introduce convenience for charging EVs via dedicated infrastructural development in Guwahati. As a token of their collaborative spirit, Tata Power has designed a web of ten cutting-edge EV chargers as a trial project in the city. Strategically placed in ten high-traffic areas, the key installations are planned for busy locations such as Dispur.

One of the ‘Seven Sisters’ Assam is nestled in India’s scenic northeastern landscapes. Besides its renowned tea gardens, rich culture, and impressive heritage, the state boasts one of the top three spots in the country’s state-wise EV penetration rates. Surpassing India’s 0.8% national average by a giant leap, the northeastern state has a penetration rate of 2.16%. With 139 fully integrated electric vehicle charging docks already set up, Assam ranks third in the country in terms of zero-emission transportation. The strategic MoU between the government and giant Tata signifies the state’s commitment toward a cleaner and greener future for the city of Guwahati. As Tata pursues its initiative to develop an elaborate EV charging domain in the city, it promotes the modern advancement of the automobile sector. It enhances the natural charm of the northeastern region.
